My first half marathon is just a couple of weeks away! That still seems surreal to me but reality is now kicking in and I guess it’s now time to call myself a runner.
I met my guide runner Steve in 2013 after attending an inclusive athletics event in Bexley. The organiser Lynne Atkinson had just trained a group of guide runners in Bromley and the next thing I knew Steve and I were meeting in Norman Park in Bromley lining up for our first park run! All went well and we have been running together ever since progressing from park runs to muddy cross country to 10k races and now on to the big half. It’s our biggest challenge yet and we can’t wait for race day!
Since Christmas I have been following a 10 week training plan and pleased to say I have stuck to most of it. I run three times a week, one session at Ladywell track, a tempo session of varying distances and then a long run on Sunday morning. The cold and wet weather over the last few weeks has tested my determination as there have been times when I really just wanted to stay at home in the warm. But proud to say the training has paid off. I managed 12 miles at the weekend and now feel confident that I can at least make the distance on the day. Steve has been extremely supportive throughout the training sessions and is a great guide and motivator.
Everyone is keen to know what my finishing time will be. I would like to finish in 2hours 20 minutes but really I am just happy to be taking part and as long as I finish it will be a big achievement for me. I never thought I’d be so excited about running and taking part in this fantastic event!
